I don’t think I know anyone who hasn’t read a Laura Ingalls Wilder book as a kid. Certainly I have fresh memories of reading them myself. In fact, I once got a little too excited to read all the books that at one point I was reading 3 at once! One moment everyone is preparing for winter, the next summer heat, the next Laura is in school and it became a whole jumbled mess. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend this tactic. But when I think back on the excitement and enthusiasm I had for reading as a kid, I can’t help but smile. These books especially seem to have that excitement inducing effect. The Little House in the Prairie series just grabs you by both hands and pulls you in. The pacing is very gentle. The balance of action and description is perfection, and the immersion in a time and place so beyond most of our experience is completely captivating.
In this section we meet Laura, the middle child of a family of three daughters. We learn about her home, her parents, and the work and magic that comes out of a childhood under these conditions. This is an autobiographical book, meaning it was written from the authors experience. Laura Ingalls Wilder was a homesteader in rural America in the 1870’s. Part of the charm of this book is able to time travel to this place and time.
I will forever have a soft spot in my heart for this author and her work. It is with great pride that I offer this to a new generation of readers. Little House in the Big Woods is a treasure. There is so much to learn, enjoy, and discover in this seemingly simple book. I am delighted that we will be reading this together and can’t wait to get started. Why wait, right? Lets begin!
