So far we’ve been observing the quiet and necessary stuff of life in the 1870’s in a pioneer childhood. Then Christmas comes and brightens everything. We see Laura’s extended family and her role in a bigger context. For her gift she gets her very own ragdoll. The most simple of objects, but we share in it’s value and meaning to Laura. A real satisfaction I find in reading these books is the total pleasure one can experience in a simplest things. It’s such a refreshing reminder that a little dish of sugar or maple syrup can be so precious and a shabby handmade doll can be the stuff of dreams.
Rural life in this time couldn’t be farther than the way we live now. And this contrast is definitely something we will play with a bit in this week’s lesson. As always we will have some questions for discussion. These questions test/strengthen reading recall and comprehension. There are also some questions geared toward recognizing literary devices and their examples. The writing prompt and activities are super fun and hope you get a lot of learning and enjoyment out of them!
