Rather conveniently, as we have come to the end of this book, the story neatly ends where it began. Love a good full circle moment! An impressive and delightful thing about the writing is how we have quietly lived through a whole year with Laura and her family. While the action and plot have been preoccupied mostly with the daily tasks of Pioneer living, there has been subtle growth in these characters. Laura is a year older and wiser. Her experiences and observations have matured her. She is a little more knowledgeable and worldly. And like us she learned a little more about the kind of person her father is.
At the very end of the book Pa returns from hunting only to reveal that he couldn’t bring himself to harm the animals. The reaction of the family is very interesting. It is also the perfect emotional tone to end this story.
But let’s not waste any more time, shall we? Read on for discussion questions that deepen comprehension skills and help spark your own ideas about the text. Explore the learning activity and creative writing prompt to inspire your own stories!
