The author Beverly Cleary wastes no time putting us right into the action. We become immediately immersed in the physical and emotional worlds of two sisters. These opening paragraphs do a lot of interesting things, even contradictory things. For instance, we know the month, the place, and a very vivid description of two characters. There are a lot of sensory tools at work too, like all the things Ramona sees, hears, and feels. While there is a lot of information given, there is also a lot left out. Why is Beezus so upset? Why does Ramona feel so proud? How are those things connected?
As we learn these feelings change with experience and perspective, two things Ramona is going to get a lot of. In this section Ramona and her family are in the lazy hazy days of summer, but it won’t always be this way. Her mother has a secret, there are big plans for their living arrangements and a new school year is right around the corner and a whole lotta growing up to do.
As we face a new year, new changes I thought what better a character than Ramona to teach us about bravery, making mistakes and learning from them. I hope you enjoy this book!
