The long, boring, brick factory days of summer are over, and school has finally begun! Ramona has high hopes for this year. Now a 1st grader, she is no longer in the “baby class.” This step up in ranks fills Ramona with a sense of pride and purpose. Full of optimism, Ramona is set on having a wonderful year. Quickly, unfortunately very quickly, it turns out to be more complicated than that. A misunderstanding leads Ramona to seem like a liar in front of her class. And Susan’s copying lead to a scene in the classroom. Only when she is comforted by her loving mother and gets a piece of good news does Ramona start to see a brighter side to things.
Our idea of bravery is complicated by this section. There are times here where Ramona doesn’t act in the way she would like, and isn’t seen by others in the way she would like to be seen. But she is always on the verge of understanding something new, or discovering something about the world and herself. She is a flawed character, but who isn’t?
Below are discussion questions meant to evoke conversation about the text, and develop explicit, and implicit meaning. There is also a research based project to strengthen investigative skills, and finally a creative writing prompt to inspire your own creative work.
