The day has finally come. The dreaded parent teacher meeting! Even Beezus has some worry around this, but it’s easily outweighed by her excitement and curiosity around Ramona’s evaluations. It is in these scenes that we really get to see how Ramona operated within her family and the roles they each play in antagonizing, supporting, and loving each other. Just when Ramona feels the most judged, her older sister casually comes to her aid by agreeing with her and taking her side.
Ramona has a lot of imagination. We know this. But I wonder if it keeps her for seeing things clearly. For instance, was her report from her teacher positive or negative? I would say it was positive and accurate. There was a lot of praise and truth. But Ramona can’t seem to see it that way. Or how she doesn’t want to sleep in her room because there is a book on her shelf that scares her. I am not faulting her for seeing things from her perspective. But she does seem to lack the ability to entertain other perspectives. It’s a hard thing to do, especially for a 6 year old, or any year old.
I love this section for the intimate look at family life and all the tenderness and learning that pours out of it.
