Summary

CRACK! The egg that Roz rescued opens and a baby gosling comes out! Quickly it starts to call her “mama” and wants to eat. Understandably confused, (how is a robot supposed to know what a baby goose eats? Did you know?) Roz sets out to find other geese for help. This need for help has forced Roz out of shell and to develop relationships with the animals around her. Before you know it, Roz has made friends with a goose, a family of beavers and deer and has a house and a garden. Not to shabby Roz. But we also see a great turn in this story. The plot goes from the robots survival to the goslings survival. A few months go by and the adorable gosling has a name and a personality and a lot of questions. Roz will begin to share some of those questions. Who is she really? What will become of them? Where does she really belong?

Camouflage

Roz has come a long way from a crate that washed up to shore. More than anything she has been building experiences and observations and converting those into knowledge. Watching the animals and the world around her, she has learn a few tricks about survival. One of those is a way to blend into her environment to hide from predators. This trick is called camouflage and here is a cool video on the 4 ways animals achieve this.

Adaptation

Camouflage is a great example of how animals use their skills to survive. Some animals are born with these abilities. Like how a bird can fly away because it has wings. Much harder to fly if you don’t have wings, as you might have noticed. While the ability camouflage is something some animals are born with, other animals have other skills that help them. But what if they don’t have those, like Roz? In that case they will have to ADAPT.

Adaptation is when something changes to become better suited to its environment. Here is a cool worksheet if you want to learn more about animals and how they have adapted.

What is one skill (besides camo) that Roz learned from the animals about survival?

Discussion Q’s

  1. How did the other animals help the Roz and the baby goose?

  2. Why does Roz feel gratitude?

  3. The gosling is a natural swimmer. Do you think there are things people are naturally good at, or can we learn to be good at anything?

  4. What are some of the questions Roz and the Gosling have about being a robot?

  5. How has Roz changed since she first left the coast by the otters? 2-3 examples.

As always I love to hear your thoughts on this book. How is it going for you? What would make this resource better for you? I am forever looking for new and more ways to make this better for you!
