Summary
We did it! The end to another beautiful book. In the first post on this unit I promised you tender moments and good writing and am I very confident that this book has delivered.
In this section Brightbill returns. A celebration is had. And a pretty glorious one at that. But the party is broken up by some unexpected guests. Three robots with one mission: to get all the robots back to the manufacturer. And I mean ALL. Roz refuses and makes a run for it. Everyone on the island comes together to protect Roz. But while they were victorious this time, it is not the end. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger (something we will get into in our writing prompt later this week.) Lucky for us there is a sequel to this book and maybe, hopefully we will get some answers.
Free Will
Time for a quick dive into some philosophy. Ok, so, free will… Basically Free Will is the idea that as independent people we are free to make our own choices. Easy, right? Here is where it gets tricky, are we all afforded the same chance at choices? And aren’t there some choices we have no influence over? Like who our parents are and where we were born. But as we also know, people can overcome their circumstances, so maybe are free to think and choose how we want. This is an interesting debate to have, but one thing is certain, objects do not have free will. Your couch can not decide what is wants for itself. Makes sense. Animals can be trained, but they always have an element of doing what they want to do. Maybe we can safely say that only living things have free will. But then what about Roz. When the other robots come to take her back, she does not obey. Is this free will? Is it even possible for robots to have free will?
