Summary
Remember in the veeeery beginning of this book, Auggie’s dad used the phrase, “like a lamb to the slaughter”? Well, this kind of comes true. In this final section of the book we witness a terrible act of bullying, a huge transformation that effects everyone in the grade, and we come to the end of the first year of middle school.
On a class trip that was fraught already since Auggie has never been away from home, we are surprised how well things are going. Part of this is due to the fact the Julien isn’t there. Without his influence, everyone is having a pretty good time. But when a night movie showing with other others takes place, trouble comes. Jack and Auggie find themselves in a perilous situation. Auggie is left hurt, but defended. After this incident, the boy war diffuses and all the other kids attitude towards Auggie changes.
In this post we are going to cover a close reading of a section about bullying. I also offer scenarios that learners can respond to, discussion questions to think deeper about the text, and a writing prompt to think creatively and bring more of your thoughts and feelings into the book.
Let’s get started!
